His father, William J. Herder, was founder and publisher of the St. John’s Evening Telegram. Two other sons, Arthur and Ralph, were also at Beaumont Hamel and survived it. Arthur was killed at Cambrai in 1917. Ralph returned home and took over the newspaper. Their sister Elsie went to France during the war where she nursed and drove ambulance.
